You Are NOT Always Right

I know many of you have done this exercise before, but if you are like me… it had been a while.  I was reminded of the picture while attending a Tennessee Association of Community Leadership (TACL) conference.  I was one of the breakout session speakers and Dr. Bob Smith (@DrBob615) was the morning keynote, which centered around this picture.

The timing of the conference was forever marked by the day we didn’t go over the fiscal cliff as a country.  The night before our leaders in Washington were able to reach a compromise.  From this lack of compromise leading up to the 11th hour, Dr. Smith took an opportunity to teach us something about perspective.

Until we are willing to set aside our opinion and what we see, we will never be able to see it from a different perspective.  This constantly happens with every problem we encounter.  A plan forward is created and it is very difficult for us to not look through the lens we first saw.  The game of Wheel of Fortune is the same way for me.  Once I get a word in my head, even after I determine there is no possible way it is right, it is very difficult to think of another one.

We all need to loosen up and allow other perspectives in.  Embrace the difference, so you can learn.  If we immediately shut people down who hold a different opinion, they will slowly drift into the shadows and stop participating.
