Have We Missed the Point?

This is the beginning of a NEW weekly installment, Faithful Fridays, dedicated to sharing insights from God’s Word and how it applies to everyday life.

28When he arrived at the other side in the region of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men coming from the tombs met him. They were so violent that no one could pass that way. 29“What do you want with us, Son of God?” they shouted. “Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?” 30Some distance from them a large herd of pigs was feeding. 31The demons begged Jesus, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.” 32He said to them, “Go!” So they came out and went into the pigs, and the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and died in the water. 33Those tending the pigs ran off, went into the town and reported all this, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34Then the whole town went out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.

Matthew 8:28-34

I don’t know how many times I have read verses from the Gospel of Matthew and somehow missed this story.  As someone who used to own a farm with a cemetery on one side, I cannot imagine the scene of men coming out of tombs.  Can you imagine if you were the ones who witnessed this?  It is not surprising the locals were asking for this Jesus person to leave the region.  If the livestock continued to commit suicide, it would not be good for business.

How many times in life do we spend our time focused on something other than the main thing?  How many times do we focus on the effect and not the cause.  We focus on what the end result was and not the miracle which happened right before.

Does this sound familiar?

Jesus just drove demons out of two men and put them into pigs which caused them to commit suicide.  WOW!

What are we missing in everyday life?  What blessings have we taken for granted because we were too focused on the outcome?
