What is Faith?

Have you ever wondered, “What is Faith?”

faith 1

This is a question we as humans wrestle with daily.  As Christians, we wrestle with it also.  We have all heard many definitions of what faith is, but I wanted to share what it may look like from a few different perspectives.  As an insurance salesman for a number of years, I fully understand how difficult it is to get someone to understand, let alone buy or buy into something they cannot see.  That’s what faith is.  Believing without seeing.

Through the eyes of a child – Is there anything more innocent than a child?  They come into this world completely dependent upon someone else taking care of them.  As they get older, the only thing they have to operate upon is what those who love them say.  You tell them to hold hands when they are crossing a busy street and they do.  You tell them to brush their teeth and they do.  You tell them to get into a car seat and buckle up…and they do.  You tell them to jump into the pool and you will be there to catch them…and they do.  The older they become the more they begin to question what they are being told.  That phase should be addressed later.  Early in life, everything we do is built upon faith.  This faith turns into trust (which I described here).

Through the eyes of a parent – We try to keep our children in a bubble as long as we can, but eventually they pop the bubble protecting them and are out on their own.  A friend of mine shared how he felt the first time his daughter left their home with a boyfriend.  I don’t even want to think about it, but what faith has to be shown in situations like that is amazing.

The two sentences I am about to share really gave a picture to what faith looks like.

Brendon Burchard recently cited Dr. Kubler Ross saying, “When you come to the edge of all of the light that you know and you are about to step into the darkness of the unknown; faith is knowing one of two things will happen to you.    There will be something solid to stand on or you will be taught how to fly.”  What an amazing approach to understanding faith.
